Water Child

By Justine C. Tajonera

He plunges into
the pool
laughing.
He stands on the
edge
and says,
"Out, out" of
his way.
He paddles with
his arms
and feet,
finding his own
way
to the surface.
Not long ago
he did nothing
but cling
to our arms.
And now
he wants only
to be free.
I watch with fear
and fascination,
wanting to hold
him.
It takes all
my love
to let him
fly
and find
his element.
