Winning

By Justine C. Tajonera

Strangely, winning is
silent.
For all the pomp
and clatter
afterwards,
the moment of
triumph is slow,
deliberate,
and solitary.

The stage is quiet,
the floor of the court
echoes only with the sound
of the players' feet,
sharp contrast
with the thrill running
through the crowd
of spectators.

The clarity of a game
well played
to a victor
is not about
the struggle with
the opponent,
least of all the will
of those watching.
It is only about
the mastery

of self.
