Light in the Water

by Justine C. Tajonera

Same body of water,
same box,
same volume of liquid
but what has changed?

Only the quality of the light.
For this one change,
there are so many different
feelings:
happiness, hope,
something to look forward to.

When the light touches
the water,
beautiful things
are visible,
whole imagined
cities and
happy
memories.

Nothing is different
but everything is
transformed
in the light
in the
water.

The Zen of Swimming

by Justine C. Tajonera

I breathe in and out,
my legs kick outward
like a frog,
my hands gather
together and
push gainst
the water,
I move forward
a foot at
a time.

There is nothing but
me and the
water and
my breath.
There is nothing
to think about,
nothing to weigh,
there is only my
body suspended
in an element
neither hot
nor cold.

The blood in my
body listens
to the flow
of the water.

At The Edge Of The Pool

By Justine C. Tajonera

My little swimmer
stands at the edge
of the pool.
He asks me to
move away,
sure in himself,
sure that he can
jump on his own.

My heart skips
a beat.
How can he be
so sure,
even as I stand
a little further
away?

I am a fallible
net,
inconstant, easily hurt,
a mixed bag
of emotions.
I am no
rock.

But his face
is full of light,
absolutely certain
of the comfort
of my arms,
whether I am near
or far.

I stand in
awe.
