This Friday

This Friday

On our anniversary,

you cooked chicken

gyros and attempted

to bake bread

(I bought dinner

rolls at the

neighborhood

store, instead).

We forgot

to take

pictures.

I cleaned

the toilet bowl

and washed

the dishes.

You gave me

the last bowl

of ice cream

and we walked

the dog at dusk

with our daughter

when it was

nice and breezy.

We saw a

whole tree

with white birds

roosting, like

so many blossoms

from afar

and forgot to

to take pictures

again.

Afterward,

all four of us

played

a word game

while eating

leftovers and

we laughed

so hard.

There is nothing

more in this

world that

I want.

Plain Vanilla Girl

By Justine C. Tajonera

There go the Cherry Chocolate
and the Almond Swirl
girls,
their skirts swishing,
their heels clicking,
a complicated stew
of perfume, designer
hand bags, and
glossy tinted hair.

I don't know
when I started my
state of
Plain Vanilla.
There was a time
that I aspired to be
Bubblegum and then
Coffee Brickle.

Along the way,
I dropped down
to the basics,
dangerously close to
generic.

But Plain Vanilla
works for me:
pretty much a canvas
for the day.

Really, I'm not
Plain Vanilla because
it tops the charts.

I choose my Plain
Vanilla self
just because.
