Memory Keeper

by Justine C. Tajonera

When data is erased
does it go
to heaven?

Waiting for my mobile
phone to be repaired,
I marvel at man's memory.
There were days when
people could contain
all there was
to know: when to plant,
what to hunt,
what to eat
what to say
where to go
in their
heads.

Today, we keep memories
in ones and zeroes,
relying on tools and
machines
to remember
for us.

And when the memory
is destroyed,
crashed,
irretrievable,
did it really
exist?

I take care
to remember
what I truly
need,
making them immune
to the wasteland
of
forgetfulness.
